33. ORAL RANITIDINE & ONDANSETRON BEFORE MEAL Ranitidine is a H2 (histamine 2) antagonist drug used for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease (PUD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and acid-related disorders. Ranitidine reduces gastric acid production by blocking H2 receptors located in the stomach, while Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 (serotonin) antagonist, used for the treatment of nausea and vomiting. When given together (as an ODT, an orally disintegrating tablet), Ranitidine and Ondansetron provide synergistic action (due to their opposing mechanisms of action, i.e,, one antagonizes the blockade of acid secretion by the H2 receptor and the other prevents the stimulation of the vomiting center or ejection reflex of the body) and provide an excellent alternative to more costly, higher-dose antiemetics. Ranitidine and Ondansetron ODTs are prescription medications and, when taken together, have been very effective for nausea, vomiting, and/or stomach problems related to other forms of chemotherapeutic agents.
