• Reduces chances of suffering a fracture from osteoporosis, particularly those in the hip or spine
• Speeds up the rate of bone loses caused by the removal of bone (i.e., slow bone removes) and keeps density of bones at the same level
• Patients may find it easier to stick to taking (the) medication at a weekly rate of 70mg rather than taking it every day
• The effectiveness (of the medication) for treating patients with osteoporosis due to aging or after menopause have been studied and have been described to work

How it Works:

A medication called alendronate belongs to a group of medications called bisphosphonates that prevents osteoclasts, or bone breaking cells. By preventing osteoclast activity, it not only slows the rate of bone loss, it also gives the (bone forming) cells (called osteoblasts) a chance to strengthen and build back up the bones over time.

Dosage & Administration:

Requirements for Patients Taking Medication

• As directed by your Doctor ? normally once every 7 days following the same weekly schedule
• Takest on empty stomach and drink a full glass of plain water at least 30 minutes prior to eating food
• Remain standing or sitting in an upright position following dosing to prevent esophagus irritation for 30 minutes.

Other Precautionary Measures:

• Patients who have had a history of esophageal disease, or who cannot remain standing or in upright position for 30 minutes after taking are excluded from using this medication.
• These medications should not be taken if the patient has a serious size restriction for this indication unless approved by their physician.
• Dental work should be reviewed by your doctor as bisphosphonates can adversely affect the jawbone.

Adverse Reactions:

• Heartburn, indigestion, or irritation to the esophagus
• Abdominal discomfort, nausea, or diarrhea
• Pain in the muscles or joints
• Hypocalcemia symptoms, including numbness and cramps may occur in rare situations.

Preservation:

- A cool, dry environment away from sunlight should be the best location for storage. - Keep out of reach of children. - Ensure that items remain in the original container/packaging, as moisture may affect the performance of the item.
